ALKINS SCORES 22, BUT WINDY CITY FALLS 107-101 TO SOUTH BAY

The Windy City Bulls, presented by BMO Harris Bank, the NBA G League affiliate of the Chicago Bulls, dropped their second consecutive game in a 107-101 loss to the South Bay Lakers on Monday night at Sears Centre Arena.

Four Windy City players scored in double figures led by Rawle Alkins who collected his fourth 20-point game of the season and tallied 22 points, three rebounds and four assists. JaKarr Sampson posted 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting and Mychal Mulder logged a game-high 43 minutes and recorded a stat line of 13 points, four rebounds, career-high six assists and career-high-tying four steals. CJ Fair recorded his fourth double-double and added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Kaiser Gates, Jon Octeus and Joe Kilgore tallied nine points apiece.

Johnathan Williams, the Lakers second Two-Way player, registered 20 points, four rebounds, two assists and a career-high-tying four blocks, while Andre Ingram recorded a season-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Travis Wear nabbed his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Isaac Bonga collected seven points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

Offense was amiss at the outset as both teams shot 7-for-22 to begin the game, but Windy City held an 11-8 advantage at the first media timeout. Following the stoppage, South Bay scored seven consecutive points to grab a four-point lead, which they’d hold for the remainder of the half. In his return to action, Sampson led all Bulls players with six points in the first quarter on 2-of-3 shooting. As a team, Windy City made six field goals and shot 27 percent in the opening quarter. For the second consecutive game, the Bulls failed to reach the 20-point mark and trailed 25-16 at the end of the first period.

After exchanging baskets to begin the second quarter, the Lakers used a mini 6-0 run to grab their first double-digit lead of the night. South Bay went on to lead by a dozen and eventually stretched their advantage to 14 on a pair of free throws by Williams with 3:25 remaining in the half. However, Windy City made a run is their own, scoring seven of the next eight points to cut the deficit to eight with under a minute to play. The Bulls shot 41 percent in the second period but couldn’t slice the lead further a both teams tallied 23 points in the stanza. South Bay scored the final point of the half at the free throw line and led 48-39 at the intermission.

South Bay scored the opening basket of the second half to retake a double-digit lead, but the Bulls defense came to life to start the third quarter. Windy City collected stops on consecutive possessions and used a 10-1 run to make it a two-point game. The Lakers withstood the Bulls momentum and opened a 14-point lead as they outpaced the Bulls 22-10 in a six-minute minute span. The end of the period belonged to the Bulls as they closed the quarter strong and made four consecutive threes to make it a one possession game once more. Windy City outscored the Lakers by five in the frame and trailed by four heading into the final 12 minutes.

Windy City opened the fourth quarter on a 7-3 run and grabbed a 78-77 lead on an Alkins three-pointer with ten and a half minutes left to play. That was the first time the Bulls were on top since the score read 11-8 halfway through the first quarter. Alkins had the hot hand as he scored 14 of his 22 points in the fourth, while accounting for nearly half of the Bulls offense in the period. The Lakers immediately tied the game, retook the lead and didn’t relinquish it for the remainder of the contest. Windy City shot 50 percent in the quarter and managed to trim the deficit to four with 3:34 remaining, but ultimately it wasn’t enough as South Bay collected their fourth straight victory, 107-101.

With the loss, Windy City is still in search of its first home victory since Nov. 2 when they defeated the Lakeland Magic 96-71 on opening night. The Bulls are now 0-3 all-time against South Bay.

The Bulls have a couple days off before hitting the road for a mini two-game road trip. On Saturday, Windy City head to Ohio to take on the Canton Charge. Tip-off at Canton Memorial Civic Center is set for 6:00pm CT.
